5/24/2023 0 Comments Tech heaven linda nagata![]() ![]() But just as a reminder to myself, I’ll mention two bonus projects: (1) Start outlining the fifth and last volume of the Inverted Frontier series and (2) Put together that third short story collection I’ve talked about over the last few years. ![]() If I can do these three things, I’ll be satisfied. That’s three goals and that’s ambitious enough. For years I’ve talked about writing a novella in this story world. See my prior post, where I realized that 2023 will be the tenth anniversary of the original publication of The Red: First Light in its indie edition. So if I’m not ready to go by, say, early September, book #4 will need to wait until 2024. Silver mostly recovered over time Pacific Storm never did. In the past I’ve rushed two books to publication ( Silver and Pacific Storm), just to get them out before the end of the year, and both did dreadfully from a sales perspective. Will I be able to publish book 4 this year? I don’t know. If things go really well, the novel will be done well before the end of 2023. I’m working on the fourth volume of the Inverted Frontier series and if things go well I’ll have a final draft before year’s end. I talked about this in my prior post which you can read here. After all, there’s more to life than writing. ![]() I used to be ambitious and list a lot of goals, but I’ve learned since to keep the list short. I’ve made it a tradition to list my writing goals for the coming year in a January 1st post. ![]()

5/24/2023 0 Comments Climb by Susan Spann![]() The rooms are lovely and the food–all shojin ryori, or Buddhist temple cuisine–is some of the best you’ll find in Japan. I spent the night at the temple–and highly recommend it if you’re in the Kyoto area and have the time. Today, it welcomes not only religious pilgrims but also secular visitors, either for the day or to stay overnight at Hieizan Enryakuji Kaikan, the shukubo (temple lodging) on the temple grounds. Enryaku-ji has functioned continuously since that date. Hiei is home to Hieizan Enryaku-ji, a Tendai Buddhist temple established on the mountain’s slopes by Saichō, the Japanese monk who founded the Tendai Buddhist sect in Japan. The first of these “bonus mountains” was sacred Mt. ![]() If there’s an important mountain in the area, I’ll try to climb it, too. ![]() Since I’m in Japan for the purpose of learning and experiencing as well as climbing, I’ve decided not to limit myself to hyakumeizan peaks. ![]() Although my original 100 SUMMITS project involved climbing “only” the nihon hyakumeizan, a lot of Japan’s most famous, sacred, and beautiful mountains did not make the “Hundred Famous Mountains” list. ![]() ![]() ![]() I liked that Abby was so focused and determined, but I also enjoyed seeing her grow and realize she could have some fun, too. ![]() However, their relationship does allow for Abby to question if she needs to focus so closely on her goals, or if she really can have it all. Abby and Chase fall for each other quite quickly, and though there is room for some turmoil between them, I felt like they moved really fast. The short length doesn’t give a lot of relationship development time for Abby and Chase, which was my biggest complaint about the book. RUN FOR THE ROSES is a novella, clocking in at approximately 80 pages. ![]() Abby tries to keep from falling for Chase, but of course, she can’t help herself. Her sympathetic backstory gave “The Good Earth” a rare kind of authority: it was billed as an authentic tale of a distant, windswept China, but its author was a white American, and it told the kind of story that Americans grappling with the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl wanted to hear-of hard work, perseverance, and triumph in the face of natural disaster and corruption.Īt the time, China, for most Americans, was a wondrous abstraction, an inscrutable assemblage of four hundred million future Christians, consumers, or citizens, depending on your game. ![]() “When I was in the Chinese world I was Chinese, I spoke Chinese and behaved as a Chinese and ate as the Chinese did, and I shared their thoughts and feelings,” she later recalled.
